Yellow Mosaic Disease

Yellow mosaic disease (YMD) is the most destructive and widely distributed disease of mungbean. The disease is caused by mungbean yellow mosaic virus and is transmitted by whitefly. The disease appears across India but it attains serious proportions in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states.  Generally, this disease appears after 2-3 weeks of sowing. The disease causes heavy yield loss from 10 to 100%, depending upon the crop stage at which the plants are infected.

White flies are very small (0.5 to 1.0 mm) with light yellowish body and white wings. It spreads the disease all over the field by transferring virus to the healthy plant while suckling juices from healthy plants. The white fly transfers the disease from one crop to another all over the year. so It effects both summer as well as kharif crop. The speed of spread of disease depends upon the number of flies.

Symptoms

  • The first visible symptoms appear as irregular yellow spots on the infected leaves that merge to form larger spots. Utimately entire leaves turn yellow and dry up.
  • The infected plant mature late and in severly infected plants, the number of flowers and pods reduced drastically.
  • In advance stages, yellow spots may also be observed on pods and seeds.

Management

  • Cultivation of resistant varieties is the most economical and practical method of disease management.
  • As white fly transmits the disease, its proper management can effectively manage the disease.
  • Spraying of Imidacloprid @0.1% (10ml/l water) or dimethoate @0.3% (30 ml/10 l. water) after 15 days of sowing. The spray may be repeated after 45 days of sowing if required.
  • Uproot and destroy diseased plants at early stage of the crop.
